Landscape architects, GROUND iNK, working in collaboration with Thomson Adsett, undertook the significant task of rejuvenating a struggling Reading Cinema retail and civic space in the multi-cultural suburb of Auburn, NSW. The project involved the full scope of landscape architecture from concept design through to construction review, to help breathe new life into this underutilised area.

Faced with the challenge of limited structural integrity, particularly of the podium slab, our team had to think outside the square to incorporate traditional green infrastructure. The solution involved the introduction of sculptural trees with integrated seating and LED lighting, aiming to enhance the plaza's vibrancy, aesthetics and safety, particularly at night.

The design also emphasized creating an inviting open environment, featuring a prominent water feature at its core. This element was intended to captivate both adults and children, adding to the overall appeal and vitality of the space. Through these interventions, the project has transformed the Reading Cinema Plaza into a vibrant hub that would cater to the diverse community of Auburn.
